Frances Foster asked about 3 years agoYes, applications will be dealt with in the usual way. Parents will receive letters on 1 March and these will include that there are proposals for changes to the schools.

SS asked about 3 years agoThe local authority built Sybil Andrews to meet the growing number of secondary pupils in the town to accommodate the growth there had been in the numbers of primary school children entering, and coming through, the system. The responsibility of the Local Authority is to ensure there are sufficient places and also balances planned admission numbers with schools to ensure this is the case. Pupils joining County Upper have come from the middle schools and these numbers have declined.

Donna Higgins asked about 3 years agoIn the discussions about numbers, we have talked about the number needed to make an upper school viable – if there is a middle school, children need to have an upper school to go on to. County Upper has had year groups of 275 and now is at 220. The recent number applying to the middle schools, and so the expected estimate to go on to the upper school, this school year was 152, which is not enough. The more recent number of 137 has led to these proposals for change. So, 150 would not be sufficient.

Share Would Unity consider treating applications for Middle school as a split site school. Pupils would be allocated a place at either school based on evenly distributing the numbers across the two sites. This would keep both schools open until higher numbers of applications can be established. The efforts made by so many parents to attract new applications in the last week are phenomenal, but the effect of them may not not be seen immediately. I know that at least one of these schools has found that pupils will move from 2 tier into 3 tier as year 5 and 6 progress and as they feel the need for greater variety of experience. on Facebook Share Would Unity consider treating applications for Middle school as a split site school. Donna Higgins asked about 3 years agoThis would be a more complicated process and involve consulting on closing one school, enlarging the other school and applying for the enlarged school to operate across two sites. We would be uncomfortable to distribute applications to middle schools evenly across two sites, regardless of parental preference, and are not certain that it would be legal.

Share Will Unity please consider the proposal of ensuring that current year 4 and 5 pupils can progress through these schools as they expected as a way of mitigating any long term damage to mental health from the last two years of living with the pandemic. Some of our pupils have coped with the anxiety levels only because of the security of knowing their schools were there and ready for them. Donna Higgins asked about 3 years agoWe have read the petition and have much sympathy with the views expressed by parents. The petition will be included in the consultation report for the Trust board, and if there is an approach to the Department for Education, to them too.

Share Open days/recruiting children for Sep 2022: I'm pleased that Horringer Court and Westley are able to hold open days in February to promote the schools to prospective parents of year 4 children. However, given your well-publicised closure proposals, it seems obvious that such parents might be too concerned about the long-term future of the schools to apply. Will you therefore demonstrate a genuine commitment to this recruitment drive, and reassure such parents, by stating publicly that the schools would remain open for at least the next four years? on Facebook Share Open days/recruiting children for Sep 2022: I'm pleased that Horringer Court and Westley are able to hold open days in February to promote the schools to prospective parents of year 4 children. K asked about 3 years agoThese events have been advertised and are of course this fits with the principle that all parents are eligible to apply for any school at any point. The thing restricting admissions is of course whether the school is full. Neither Westley nor Horringer Court Middles schools are in this position. The consultation is still underway, and we have a number of alternative proposals we are actively analysing and will feedback once we have concluded this consultation. You can find details of them on the website frontpage.

KT asked about 3 years agoOur proposals are to initially have a split site for the secondary school and this will help both students and parents currently in the middle schools to feel they are maintaining contact with elements of the system they want, chose and value. This consultation is about listening to alternatives and your suggestion has been presented by a number of people. At the end of the consultation period a submission will be written and any viable alternatives will receive a response.

Share The answers of 'current transport arrangements are expected to continue' and 'we anticipate that we will work with Local Authority transport systems to allow access into the schools as it is now' are not answering our concerns. If you do not take in new pupils from Newmarket and other villages in year 5, the current arrangements become unsustainable and unaffordable. In other words, you heavily disadvantage children from parents who have made a conscious choice to send their children to Horringer Court because of its excellent reputation and the ease of transport. A rise in cost of transportation is unaffordable for many parents. Would you be willing to make a financial effort to ensure these children will be able to continue to attend Horringer Court? on Facebook Share The answers of 'current transport arrangements are expected to continue' and 'we anticipate that we will work with Local Authority transport systems to allow access into the schools as it is now' are not answering our concerns. M asked about 3 years agoSchool transport is certainly one of the issues that will need to be addressed in more detail should the proposals go ahead. Whilst is impossible to firm these up at this stage, please be assured that the Trust Board have the intention to make a new County Upper inclusive, which includes sustaining where possible transport and travel. The assurance to work with Suffolk County Transport on this will hopefully place us well to allow pupils to get to their school of choice. We have already discussed 2022-23 when the proposals are that there would not be Year 5 pupils joining the middle schools. If this leads to transport arrangements being more expensive next school year, the trust is expecting to subsidise these costs so that there is no increase to parents.

Share We proposed merging the middle schools and making County Upper a secondary school. Your answer 'A question though is whether this provides any greater security for the number joining an upper schools in Year 9' could be turned around. Why do you not focus on making County Upper an excellent school again before disrupting the education of the children in middle school? One would assume the numbers signing up for County Upper will go up as soon as it receives a better rating from Ofsted. In addition, this is likely to lead to increased numbers signing up for the middle schools. on Facebook Share We proposed merging the middle schools and making County Upper a secondary school. M asked about 3 years agoThis has been a debate at a number of the Parent and Public meetings. A significant priority for the Trust is to build on the recent effective validation of the safeguarding work at County Upper to restore the reputation of the school within the community. Productive work has been done by the school to make good progress.
